deposition
I can identify surface features caused by the constructive processes of deposition.
- deltas
- sand dunes
Deposition: The process by which sediment carried by water or wind is moved to a new location.
Deltas
Deltas form as rivers empty their water and sediment into another body of water, such as an ocean, lake, or another river. A river moves more slowly as it nears its mouth, or end. This causes sediment carried downstream by currents, to fall to the river bottom. The slowing velocity of the river and the build-up of sediment allows the river to break from its single channel as it nears its mouth
Sand Dunes
A dune is a hill composed of sand, formed by the wind. Dunes can also form underwater by the action of waves and currents. Strong winds can pick up sand and move it over the surface. More sand may be trapped as the wind strikes the face of a sand hill. This can grow into a sand dune, if wind conditions remain the same. Changing wind patterns can alter sand formations created by the wind. This can destroy a dune or change its shape.
